Raptor Saturday!

Join us the first Saturday of the month for a dynamic and interactive program. Each month, we will focus on a new and exciting theme to help visitors learn something interesting - or even weird - about our feathered friends. Our amazing collection of raptors go all-out to enthrall their audience! Come in from the cold and spend some quality time with the birds! Sponsored by Wisconsin Energy Foundation.

Sky Hunters: Word with a Bird

Get a beak-to-beak view of one of SANC’s feather ambassadors. A raptor handler will be showcasing one of our many birds of prey. SANC’s falcons, hawks, owls, Turkey Vulture and Bald Eagle will appear on a rotating basis. Stop by each weekend to check them out.

Boomers and Beyond

The “Boomers and Beyond” program will continue to be offered the first Thursday of the month. These winter classes will primarily be indoors with a brief outdoor walk, if weather permits. In January, we will study the physical properties of water and why it is so important for life. February’s class will learn the geologic history of Lake Michigan from geologist Jim Rosenbaum. A look at our lake-formed terrace will complete the morning, again, if conditions allow.

Discovery Nature Hike

Have you often wished you could do your daily walk for exercise in a beautiful wild place and learn about the amazing things that you’re passing by? We will walk along the meadows, woods, wetlands, and lake shore of the Center while Don Quintenz leads us to the seasonal events that stir our sense of beauty or imagination and helps answer the questions that nature evokes in us. The entire program is taught on the trail. In January, we will visit the spectacular beach ice formations, and in February explore the upland trails primarily for animal signs.

Hangin’ with Hyatt: The Search for Antlers

It’s antler shedding time! Come help Jim look for antlers. He guarantees they’re out there, and if you find one, YOU GET TO KEEP IT! You’ll also learn about the Center’s long-standing deer relocation program while enjoying refreshments. Maybe a lucky kid will get put into a trap?

Nature Adventurers – Winter Wonderland

Come explore the winter wonderland of snow and ice. What animal left those tracks in the snow? How do animals stay warm in winter? Who is hibernating? Who migrated? We will hike, explore, learn and play. Nature Adventurers meets once a week for 5 weeks. Please have your child eat a snack prior to class and, as always, dress for the weather!

Nature Explorers – Winter Season

Explore the wonders of winter at SANC! Ice, snow, and sparkles will fill our senses, as we develop an appreciation for this important season. We will discover how the plants and animals survive winter in Wisconsin.
Nature Explorers meets once a week for 5 weeks. Please have your child eat a snack prior to class and, as always, dress for the weather!

Animal Movie Night

It’s starting to get cold outside, so come inside for some fun. We’ll start by making s’mores at the fireplace. At 6:30pm, Jim will bring out his scaly and slimy friends for ‘show and tell.’ Then get your blankets and sleeping bags out for our featured presentation on the big screen. January’s program will feature The Smurfs and in February, we’ll watch the inspirational story of Dolphintale.

Lake Michigan Full Moon Snowshoe

We will visit a scene that is one of the most beautiful of all seasons – the ice formations of our Great Lake in the light of a full moon. We will try our luck at calling in owls and finish with hot drinks in front of our lake-view room’s fireplace. Snowshoes provided. If there is no snow, we will hike on foot.

Hand-in-Hand: (2-4 year olds)

Explore nature with your little one! We will hike, play, do art activities and listen to a story. Dress for the weather, because best of all, we explore outdoors rain or shine! All classes are geared for children ages 2-4 and each child must be accompanied by an adult.

         Footprints in the Snow

We will learn about animal tracks and will become “track detectives”. DATE: Thursday, February 9th

Leap Year Sky Watching

Enjoy an evening of stargazing on February 29, which we can only do once every four years. Constellations such as Leo the Lion, the Big Dipper and Gemini the Twins are sure to delight your eyes. A good program for first-timers and those who need help understanding the night sky. The program begins inside the building and then continues outside. Dress for the weather and bring a flashlight and binoculars.

The Spiritual World of Nature

Our monthly series helps us all to connect to nature more intimately by getting in touch with the powerful spiritual side of the natural world. Pre-registration is encouraged and all programs are geared for adults. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided for all classes.



         The Essential Elements of the North American Indian

Join Richard Gonzalez, member of the Iroquois Confederation, and learn the essential elements of the life of the American Indian. You will learn the One Inevitable Duty of the Indian, you will understand the Sacred Harmony, and change your perceptions of the Hollywood image of the past. Most importantly, you will understand the Indian and his relationship to God, Man, and Nature – the Sacred Harmony. DATE: Thursday, February 14th

         Iroquois Influence on Benjamin Franklin and the Formation of the USA

In 1987. during the bicentennial celebration of the United States of America, the United States Senate passed a resolution recognizing and affirming the historical fact that the Iroquois Constitution is the foundation of the United States of America. Meet Richard J. Gonzalez M.A. (Iroquois Confederation, Oneida Tribe, Turtle Clan) and learn the amazing details of how Ben Franklin visited his great grandfather, Oskanondonha, to learn the various precepts of liberty. You didn’t learn this in history class! (Note Richard’s afternoon program earlier the same day.) Light refreshments and food provided. DATE: Thursday, February 14th
