Raptor Saturdays!

In this family program, handlers allow a close-up view of falcons, hawks, owls, a turkey vulture, and one of our bald eagles. Sharp talons, curved hooked beaks, binocular vision, and incredible hearing make these raptors specialized birds of prey.

Sky Hunters: Word with a Bird

Get a beak-to-beak view of one of SANC’s feathered ambassadors. A raptor handler will be showcasing one of our many birds of prey. Our falcons, hawks, owls, a vulture, and eagles will appear on a rotating basis. Stop by each weekend to check them out.

Boomers and Beyond

The “Boomers and Beyond” , offered the first Thursday of every month, will start with socializing and coffee and treats then we’ll head out on the trails. March’s class will learn “The Tales of Last Winter Through Sign”. April’s class will experience the inner workings of our Raptor Facility. Participants will be up close and personal with all aspects of the Raptor Program - food preparation, enrichment and flight training. Nowhere else can you be “beak to beak” with so many exquisite birds of prey. You must be a member for this April tour.

Ugandan born and raised Fr. Augustine Kalemeera will present “The Catholic Church and the Environment: Some Examples from Uganda.” He will discuss how traditional Ugandans saw the hand of God in unusually large trees, how modernization despite benefits has harmed the environment, our need once again to respect the environment and why the church should be at the forefront of protecting it

During the months of March and April, Tom Galten will present a six-week daytime Eckhart Tolle series. Through his books and live talks, Eckhart Tolle has been helping meet the need for spiritual nourishment Tolle’s clarity and simplicity is grounded in the power of genuine spiritual experience. TOM GALTEN: OVERVIEW OF ECKHART TOLLE’S TEACHING
Tom Galten will facilitate an evening overview discussion of Eckhart Tolle’s teaching and its potential implications for us all. Even if you’ve already been to a Tolle session you’re bound to encounter fresh material a second time through. Since the publication in 1999 of his first book, The Power of Now, Tolle has promoted the spiritual growth and development of millions of seekers worldwide. Note the additional six-week daytime Tolle series being offered above.

Fireside Conversations

Join Don Quintenz as we learn as a group through thought-provoking, environmentally-related readings. We meet on the second Monday of each month at 1:30 PM. We will base our discussions for January on Aldo Leopold’s “A Taste for Country” and February on “The Upshot”, both of which are often included in his book, Sand County Almanac. For newcomers, missing the discussions of earlier chapters will not prevent you from participating in and enjoying the current discussions. Light refreshments will be provided

Explore nature together with your preschooler! We will meet every other week for three sessions. Every week, we will start in the new Goldfinch preschool classroom for some play and art activities and join together for a story before heading out on a hike, Dress for the weather!

Discovery Nature Hiking

Walk along the meadows, woods, wetlands, and lake shore of the Center while Don Quintenz interprets the scenery and helps answer the questions that nature evokes in us. The entire program is taught on the trail. Physically you need to be able to walk any of the loop trails at the Center taking short but frequent stops.

It’s Maple Syrup Time!

Bring your big boots and sweet tooth, and we’ll do the rest! Learn the stages of making maple syrup, from tapping trees to boiling sap. Inside we hear the story about the serendipitous discovery of maple syrup, followed by a slideshow all about the magic of maple sugar. Then it’s outside as we visit the Schlitz Sugar bush and Evaporator! We’ll top it all off with REAL maple syrup over silver dollar pancakes!

Nature Uncovered

Early spring migrants are returning home while amphibians are beginning to awaken from the slumbers of hibernation. Spring time at the Audubon Center isn’t far away. Join Education Specialist and all around sleuth Tom Finley as he seeks out vernal happenings. We’ll hike the trails in a leisurely fashion to discover signs of deer, birds and a variety of other wildlife. Don’t forget to bring your boots as the trails can be muddy, icy and wet this time of year.

The Nature of Pi

Celebrating pi day is as easy as pie on Sunday March fourteenth (yep, that’s 3.14) at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center. Join us as we explore the wonder of math and nature through a wide assortment of interactive games for various ages. Attempt some tower mathematics 60 feet above the ground, try your hand at writing “pi -ku”, do some pi art, hike for a pi mile (3.14), and when you are finished, don’t forget to sample a slice of pie.

Snake Patrick Celebration

Join us for Snake Patrick’s Day celebration, as Jim O’Hyatt gives us a snake’s eye view as he separates truth from fiction on the legend of the snakes and Saint Pat (from the snake’s point of view). We’ll have plenty of green snacks for this family- friendly celebration.

Starry Nights of Spring

Enjoy a fun evening of stargazing as we search the heavens from the trails and the top of our 60 foot tower. Spring constellations such as Leo the Lion, the Big Dipper and Gemini the Twins are sure to delight. This is a great program for first-timers and seasoned “space cadets”. The program begins inside and then it’s time to hike outside. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring a flashlight and binoculars, if you have them.

Sky Dance of the American Woodcock

Join Jean Strelka on a search for the American woodcock. Start indoors learning about the woodcock’s unique adaptations for survival and its courtship flight. Then, just before sunset, it’s outside to observe the male woodcock performing his “sky dance”. The walk will be cancelled if there is heavy rain or temperatures below 320. This program is for adults and children over 10. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Rocks and Soil: What’s Underfoot?

Explore the incredible rocks and soil of the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center. Learn what soil is made of and why we depend on it for life on Earth. Find fossils on the lakeshore and learn how rocks breakdown to become soil and how soil slowly turns back into rock again.

Rain showers, muddy puddles, the return of animals and the warming sun all set the stage for experiencing and exploring the Nature Center in the spring. Join us for hiking and adventuring fun! Nature Adventurers meets once a week for 5 weeks. Please have your child eat a snack prior to class and as always, dress for the weather!

The Wonderful World of Bats

See a very rare live fruit bat, the Malayan flying fox, the largest bat in the world with a 6-foot wingspan, it is humongous! Also see the endangered golden bat, and many more species. Our presenter for this very special program is Mr. Rob Mies, Director of the Organization for Bat Conservation in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Rob is a recognized bat expert, author, and has consulted for National Geographic, Nickelodeon, and The Discovery Channel.
