Schlitz Audubon Nature Center’s
Sky Hunters: Birds of Prey program.
In 1987 Schlitz Audubon Nature Center received permits for live raptors and the Raptor Education program was launched.
Through the dedicated efforts of many volunteers the program has developed into a key element of the Center.
In 1996 the first Raptor Saturday program was held with three visitors in attendance. Today the Raptor Saturday program averages over 85 guests, and its popularity has generated a spinoff program held each weekend day called “A Word with a Bird.” In 1998 donations and in-kind donations of materials allowed us to expand the number of birds in our collection and build a Raptor Flight and Care Facility.
After the building was finished, word came that a bald eagle was available. Many other birds have arrived to make our nature center their home, including a peregrine falcon and barn owl, both endangered species in the state, as well as screech and great horned owls, kestrels, a barred owl, red-tailed hawks, a Harris’ Hawk and a turkey vulture.
Your generosity helps us continue sharing the importance of Raptors and preserving their natural habitat. Do your part today by sponsoring one of our feathered friends!
All of our raptors are injured and non-releasable to the wild. The Schlitz Audubon Nature Center holds permits for the possession and exhibition of live birds and artifacts from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. By adopting your favorite raptor, you help provide food, enrichment, medical care, training, underwriting educational programs and much more. All sponsorships of your new feathered friends are tax deductible.
