Horicon Marsh Birding Trip

Tour the Horicon Wildlife Refuge, the Midwest’s premier wetland, with skilled naturalists. Over 223 species of birds and other diverse wildlife call Horicon home. Discover this wetland by tour van, pontoon boat, and on foot. Spring is absolutely the best time to see and hear the many species as they court and migrate further north as well as rest and feed in this critical stopover. Guided by Don Quintenz and expert birder Jean Strelka. A box lunch is provided at Marshhaven, where we will have a chance to view their wildlife exhibits. Transportation, interpretation, fees and lunch all included. Handicapped accessible.

Amphibian Search at the Kettle Moraine Forest

Join SANC’s amigo of the anurans (frogs), chum of the chelonians (turtles) and Jim Hyatt, as we put on hip waders and stroll through special breeding ponds. We’ll use strainers and nets to catch frogs, toads, salamanders, and tadpoles. Jim will teach us plenty about these critters. We will meet at the nature center in the southern Kettle Moraine State Forest at 9:00 AM. There is no state park fee if you stay around the nature center. If you decide to explore other areas in the state forest, a day fee will have to be paid. The fees are $7 for a resident and $10 for a non-resident. SANC will provide the waders. A map and list of things to bring will be mailed upon enrollment.

Migratory Bird Canoe Trip

In support of International Migratory Bird Day we will “immerse” ourselves in wetlands near Mukwonago using Audubon canoes to search for the great diversity of birds that inhabit them. Led by Don Quintenz and Audubon Teacher Carol Thomas, one of the Center’s best birders, we will see as many species as possible while still enjoying the learning that comes from unhurried observation. No canoeing experience is necessary, but if you have no canoeing experience you may be put with another person with experience. Transportation and canoe equipment provided. Bring you own lunch, water and snacks.

A Chiwaukee Prairie and Renak - Polak Woods

Chiwaukee is Wisconsin’s showiest sand prairie at its peak bloom! Guided by Don Quintenz we will saunter into this sandy garden of over 300 species of wildflowers to learn its amazing secrets. See a spring carpet of wildflowers of many different types. After a bag lunch in a local park, we will visit a natural area of old-growth maple forest. The Renak-Polak woods is noted for its spectacular spring wildflowers. Just to see the trees in this old growth forest is worth the trip. Transportation and interpretation is provided. Bring your own lunch, water and snacks.

Door County Getaway

Door County harbors a treasure trove of natural wonders. This year we will go to all new natural areas which will include: Mud Lake Wildlife Area with its scenic wetlands, Whitefish Dunes with its lake dunes including a view from the top of Mount Baldy, Mink River, featuring a fossilized coral reef, Ridges Sanctuary’s newly aquired 17- acre Logan Creek and Piel properties, Clark’s Lake , Hubbard’s Creek and Cana Island Lighthouse. The evenings will include telescopic sky viewing and possibly an optional concert. Participants need to be able to walk over uneven terrain 1 - 2 miles for a couple of hours at a time. The stay will be at Lawrence University’s Bjorklundun campus in Bailey’s Harbor. Price includes transportation, lodging, all fees , food except for Friday night’s restaurant dinner on our return. Rotary Botanical Garden

We will finish our tour of Japanese Gardens in the Midwest by visiting the largest one in Wisconsin at the Rotary Botanical Gardens in Janesville. The Gardens are home to many dramatic and themed gardens some with an international focus, such as the Scottish, French formal, Italian and English cottage. In the morning we will tour the gardens with a Docent. After lunch you can travel on your own to any of the gardens, the visitor center or gift shop. Of particular interest might be a less formal garden, such as the Fern and Moss garden, which is recognized by the Hardy Fern Foundation of the United States. Interpretation, fees and transportation are provided. We will enjoy the seasonal weather and eat outside so bring your own lunch. Handicapped accessible.
