Volunteer

Mark your calendars for these spring 2008 volunteer opportunities:

Saturday March 8 Preschool Pancake Breakfast. Help serve pancakes and juice, and clean up. This event brings in around 500 people. Shifts are from 8am to 11:30am. We need volunteers age 13 and up.

Saturday April 19 Earth Day. Help our staff with fishing, canoeing, crafts, serving cake, information table and other areas. Shifts are 2+ hours each. Volunteers age 13 and up.

Summer Class Assistant. Get on the mail list NOW for this very popular volunteer program for students age 12 and up. Help our Audubon teachers with a wide variety of weekday summer camps for school-age children. Minimum time commitment is one week and shifts are mornings or afternoons from mid June to mid August. This is also a good volunteer opportunity for those who have part of the summer taken up by overnight camps elsewhere. We send information in March and time slots fill quickly.

Ongoing project: Pond-emonium! In collaboration with other area nature centers, we are gathering information about who lives in our ephemeral (seasonal) ponds on our property. We need volunteers to observe and record what they see. The time commitment is two hours every three months. Jim Hyatt’s information session Tuesday February 5, 2008 from 6-8pm here at the center explains it all. Let us know if you are coming. This is for committed volunteers age 16+.

Ongoing Volunteer Positions Open

We need front desk volunteers: Please consider helping us by answering phones, using a computer cash register, collecting admissions, registering members for programs, and answering general center questions. The shift is twice a month on weekdays and once a month on weekends. The morning shift is 9-12:30 and the afternoon shift is 12:30-5.

Land Stewardship: Enjoy our beautiful outdoor sanctuary by helping the land stewards weed, plant, and remove invasive species all year long. The adults come Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 9-noon. High school and college students, and some adults, come on Saturdays from 9:30-noon. We have many students come weekdays during school breaks and in the summer. This is a drop-in program, so please come the times you are able.

Schlitz Audubon Nature Centers volunteers provide essential support for our day-to-day operations, and are a vital part of the Centers warm atmosphere and "can-do" land ethic. SANCs volunteers provide countless hours and invaluable support to our teachers and staff. They also work diligently with our land stewardship staff to help preserve and restore our 185-acre "outdoor classroom" and the site around our green building. Without our volunteers, the Center could not function. Whatever your particular interests or talents, we have a volunteer opportunity for you.
